Most hermit crabs are sold in
temporary plastic kits.
We design for
lifelong habitats.

Hermit crabs are complex, long-lived creatures that can thrive for decades with the right environment. They feel stress, they seek enrichment, and they need proper hydration to survive.

HQ Shell Club exists because habitat design for hermit crabs has been neglected for too long. We believe every product placed in a crabitat should be intentional — not an afterthought.

Every piece we make is modular, expandable, and designed to work together. Build the habitat your crabs deserve, one system at a time.

Double Climbing Wheel
DJ Booth

The problem: Most crabitat "enrichment" is decorative at best, ignored at worst. Hermit crabs need to move, climb, and engage with their environment to thrive.

Two independently spinning climbing wheels on a weighted, stable base. The DJ Booth gives your crabs an actual reason to get up and explore — and it looks incredible doing it. Movement is not a luxury for hermit crabs. It's essential.

  • Dual independently rotating wheels — more engagement, more movement
  • Weighted base engineered for structural stability, no tipping
  • Textured surfaces provide secure grip for even the largest crabs
  • Designed to fit naturally within the HQ Shell Club modular system
  • Visual identity that's bold enough to be the centerpiece of any crabitat

For: Keepers who understand enrichment is a biological need, not decoration.

Block Wall
Food Dish

The problem: Standard food dishes are hard to clean, tip easily, and take up floor space that your crabs need to navigate freely.

A wall-integrated feeding station with removable magnetic trays. Mount it, fill it, and lift the trays out for a rinse. That's it. Clean feeding without disrupting the tank, without digging through substrate, without the usual mess.

  • Magnetic tray system — snap in, snap out, rinse, return
  • Modular wall integration keeps the tank floor clear
  • Multiple compartments for food variety
  • Stable, no-tip design holds position during feeding frenzies
  • Compatible with the full HQ Shell Club Block Wall system

For: Keepers who are tired of daily food dish drama and want a feeding setup that actually works.

Block Wall
Water Dish

The problem: Shallow dishes don't allow hermit crabs to properly soak, and most store-bought options aren't deep enough to support the full-body hydration crabs require.

Designed for deep soaking — because hermit crabs don't just drink water, they need to fully submerge to absorb moisture through their modified gills. Bubbler-compatible to keep water fresh. Stone-textured exterior that blends naturally into any substrate landscape.

  • Deep basin design supports full-body soaking behavior
  • Bubbler-compatible port for oxygenated, moving water
  • Stone-textured exterior for a naturalistic look
  • Wall-mount compatible with Block Wall system
  • Easy access and stable positioning in any substrate depth

For: Keepers who know that hydration isn't optional — it's survival.

Dual Removable
Bubbler Water Dish

The problem: A single water source is a hygiene risk. When it gets contaminated or runs dry, there's no backup — and you often don't notice until it's too late.

Two separate water reservoirs in one clean, compact form. Both are fully removable for cleaning without disturbing the substrate. Both are bubbler-compatible. For serious crabitat keepers who build for redundancy, cleanliness, and crab wellbeing above all else.

  • Dual independent reservoirs — fresh water and saltwater in one unit
  • Fully removable inserts for quick, easy cleaning
  • Both chambers are bubbler-compatible
  • Designed with maintenance hygiene as a core feature, not an afterthought
  • Compact footprint for even the most space-constrained crabitats

For: Dedicated keepers who maintain separate fresh and salt water — as they should.

Modular Climbing
& Tunnel System

The problem: Most climbing structures are one-size-done — you buy one piece and it stays exactly the same, forever. A growing crabitat needs to evolve.

The structural heart of the HQ Shell Club system. Stackable tunnel sections, connecting pieces, elevated platforms, and curved passages — all engineered to snap together and apart as your crabitat grows. Build a starter section today. Add to it next month. Build a masterpiece over time.

  • Fully modular — connect, stack, branch, and expand indefinitely
  • Hexagonal lattice design provides grip and visibility simultaneously
  • Compatible with corner curves, straight sections, and custom connectors
  • Substantial enough for large crabs, refined enough for smaller species
  • The backbone of any serious, long-term crabitat build

For: The crabitat architect. The keeper who plans ahead, builds thoughtfully, and loves watching their crabs explore.

Design with
intention.

Everything we make starts with a question: what does the crab actually need? Then we engineer backward from the answer. Every feature earns its place.

Engineered First

Every dimension, joint, and surface is designed with the crab in mind before aesthetics are considered. Function is the foundation.

🔧
Modular Always

Nothing we make is a dead end. Every product is designed to connect, stack, or integrate with the rest of the HQ Shell Club system.

🧼
Maintenance Matters

We design for cleaning. Removable inserts, accessible joints, and smooth surfaces mean your crabitat can stay pristine without heroic effort.

Built for Life

Hermit crabs can live 30+ years. We build accordingly. These aren't seasonal pet accessories — they're long-term habitat infrastructure.

Brand Manifesto

For the Crabs.

They were never meant to be souvenirs. Not a trophy from the beach. Not a novelty to be forgotten by September. Hermit crabs are ancient, resilient, and surprisingly complex animals. They live in communities. They solve problems. They feel stress. They need proper water — two kinds of it. They need space to dig, climb, explore, and eventually molt in peace.

They deserve better than a painted shell and a sponge.

The hermit crab is one of the most misunderstood pets in the world. Sold in loud beach shops, packed in plastic tanks with pebbles and a painted shell, handed to children who have no idea what they're holding. Within months, most are gone. Declared "hard to keep alive" when the truth is they were never given the conditions to live.

We started HQ Shell Club because we believed that deserved to change. Not through guilt. Not through lectures. Through design. Through building the products that make proper care the easy choice — the default choice. A modular habitat that grows. A water system that maintains itself. An enrichment structure that makes your crab want to move.

Care is love.
Design is care.

Every product we make is a small act of advocacy for the crabs that can't advocate for themselves. We don't believe in disposable pets. We don't believe enrichment is optional. And we don't believe the keepers who love their crabs should have to settle for equipment that wasn't designed with real care in mind.

So we build differently. For the keepers who do their research at midnight. For the crabitat architects who measure in inches and plan in years. For the crabs who carry their homes on their backs and deserve a worthy place to put them.

This is for the crabs.

What every keeper should know.

01
Proper Hydration

Hermit crabs need access to both dechlorinated fresh water and marine saltwater at all times. These aren't optional — they regulate their biology through their gills by absorbing and storing water in their shells.

02
Enrichment is Essential

In the wild, hermit crabs explore, climb, forage, and socialize. In captivity, they need environmental enrichment that mirrors that range of activity. A bare tank isn't peaceful — it's impoverished.

03
Molting Safety

Crabs require deep, humid substrate to molt successfully — a process they must complete to grow and survive. Interrupted molts are fatal. Habitat design must account for this fundamental biological need.

04
Temperature & Humidity

Tropical species require warm, humid environments year-round. They breathe through modified gills that must stay moist. A habitat that dries out isn't just uncomfortable for the crab — it's life-threatening.

05
Shell Selection

Hermit crabs change shells as they grow. They need access to a variety of appropriately sized, natural shells at all times. A crab forced to stay in a too-small or painted shell will experience ongoing physical stress.

06
Community Living

Hermit crabs are social animals. They communicate, interact, and form loose social groups. Isolated crabs show measurably higher stress responses. The best crabitats include at least two crabs — ideally more.

Built from
frustration.

HQ Shell Club didn't start as a business plan. It started as a problem we couldn't stop thinking about.

We kept seeing the same thing: keepers who genuinely cared about their crabs, working hard to do right by them, but struggling to find products that were actually designed for the job. Most of what's available was either too flimsy, too shallow, too unstable, or simply not designed with the biology of the crab in mind. The enrichment products were decorative. The water dishes were too small. The climbing structures were afterthoughts.

So we started building our own. And when we shared what we'd made with the hermit crab community, the response was immediate. People wanted this. People needed this.

HQ Shell Club is the result: a brand built specifically for the keepers who take their crabs seriously. Every product we design goes through the same process — we start with what the crab needs, then we engineer a product around that need. Functional first. Modular always. Beautiful when we get it right.

We're designed and engineered by Race Conditions Labs — a team that believes the best products come from approaching every problem with rigor, creativity, and genuine love for the end user. In this case, the end users are crabs. We're good with that.

This is just the beginning. We're building a full system — a world-class ecosystem of hermit crab habitat products that can grow with your crabitat for years. If you've been waiting for someone to take this seriously, we're here.

What's coming.

We're always designing. Here's a look at what's on the roadmap for the HQ Shell Club system.

Your questions.
Answered.

What materials are your products made from?
All HQ Shell Club products are 3D printed using crab-safe materials. We specifically select filaments that are non-toxic and safe for use in high-humidity environments. We do not use materials that contain zinc, copper, or other metals known to be harmful to hermit crabs.
Are your water dishes really safe for hermit crabs to soak in?
Yes. Our water dishes are designed and printed with crab hydration as the primary concern. We use only crab-safe materials and design for the depth and access that proper soaking requires. No toxic dyes, no metal hardware, no shortcuts.
How do I clean the products?
Most HQ Shell Club products are designed for easy cleaning. Removable trays and inserts can be rinsed under dechlorinated water. Avoid dish soap or harsh detergents unless thoroughly rinsed. A light scrub brush works great for any textured surfaces.
Can I use a bubbler with the water dishes?
Yes! Our Block Wall Water Dish and Dual Removable Bubbler Water Dish are both designed with bubbler ports. Moving, oxygenated water is healthier for your crabs, and we built for it from day one.
Will these products work in a high-humidity crabitat?
Absolutely. All products are designed and tested for the warm, high-humidity environments that hermit crabs require. Proper tropical hermit crab habitats run at 70–80% relative humidity — our products are built for exactly that.
Do the modular products connect to each other?
Yes, and that's the whole point. The HQ Shell Club system is designed to grow. The Climbing & Tunnel System, Block Wall products, and other pieces are all built around a modular design philosophy. As we release new products, they'll integrate with what you already have.
Where can I buy HQ Shell Club products right now?
Currently, all products are available through our Etsy shop. Direct purchasing through this website is coming soon. Follow along and join our community — you'll hear about it first.
Can I request custom colors or configurations?
We love hearing from the community about color preferences and configurations. Reach out through the contact section — we can't guarantee custom orders, but we do listen and it informs what we build next.

Let's talk
